Pakistan’s space agency, SUPARCO, has shared its preliminary forecast regarding the Zil Hajj moon sighting for 1447 Hijri. According to the agency, the crescent moon is expected to be visible across several parts of the country on the evening of May 17, 2026, making May 18 likely to be the first day of Zil Hajj in Pakistan.
Officials from SUPARCO explained that the new moon is expected to be born at approximately 1:01am on May 17. By the time of sunset later that day, the moon will be around 18 hours and 30 minutes old, which is generally considered favourable for visibility.
The agency further stated that both astronomical and weather conditions are expected to support moon sighting in different regions. Coastal areas may have an even better chance of visibility because the moon is expected to remain visible for nearly 60 minutes after sunset. This time gap between sunset and moonset usually increases the possibility of successfully sighting the crescent.
Based on these astronomical calculations, Eid ul Adha 2026 is likely to be celebrated in Pakistan on May 27, 2026. However, the final and official announcement will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after receiving moon sighting reports from across the country.
Every year, Muslims across Pakistan wait eagerly for the official moon sighting announcement as it determines the beginning of Zil Hajj and the date of Eid ul Adha, one of the most important Islamic festivals. The occasion is celebrated with special prayers, animal sacrifices, and gatherings with family and friends.
Citizens are now expected to closely follow updates from the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee as the expected moon sighting date approaches.
