India made an impressive start to the three match ODI series by defeating England by six wickets at Edgbaston, taking a 1-0 lead with a commanding all round performance. The victory was driven by captain Shubman Gill, whose fluent knock ensured India comfortably chased the target of 259 runs with 28 balls remaining.
Gill once again proved why Edgbaston is one of his favorite venues. The Indian skipper played a stylish innings of 80 runs from 75 balls, keeping the chase under control despite losing experienced batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early. Although Gill retired late in his innings after suffering cramps, team management confirmed that he is expected to be fit for the second ODI in Cardiff.
After India slipped to 48 for 2, Shreyas Iyer joined Gill to rebuild the innings with a valuable partnership that shifted the momentum in the visitors’ favor. Once Gill left the field, Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 52, while Axar Patel smashed an unbeaten 57. Their match winning 102 run partnership guided India to a comfortable victory without any further pressure.
Earlier, India’s bowlers delivered an outstanding performance after England made a promising start. The hosts collapsed from 61 without loss to 80 for 5 as the Indian attack struck repeatedly. Axar Patel starred with the ball, claiming four wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah returned with an economical spell that kept England’s batting lineup under constant pressure.
England fought back through Joe Root, who remained unbeaten on 76, and Liam Dawson, who scored 68, adding a crucial partnership that lifted the total to 258. However, the score proved insufficient against India’s confident batting display.
The win gives India valuable momentum after disappointing T20 series results earlier on the tour. With Shubman Gill leading from the front and strong contributions from both the batting and bowling departments, India will head into the second ODI full of confidence as they aim to secure the series.
