Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to visit Iran in the first week of July to attend the funeral prayers of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to official sources.

The visit comes at a sensitive time in regional politics, as Iran prepares for multi-day funeral ceremonies scheduled from July 4 to July 9, ending with Khamenei’s burial in Mashhad, his hometown. Reports indicate the funeral will include public gatherings in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad.
Khamenei, who led Iran since 1989, was killed in the opening phase of the US-Israel conflict with Iran earlier this year. His death marked a major turning point in the region, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei reportedly taking over leadership responsibilities.

Sources suggest that after attending the funeral in Iran, PM Shehbaz may also travel to Turkiye, a country that strongly supported diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions during the recent conflict.

Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy has gained significant attention in recent months. Islamabad has been actively involved in mediation efforts that helped bring key stakeholders to the negotiating table during the conflict. These efforts have been acknowledged by both Washington and Tehran, strengthening Pakistan’s diplomatic standing.

The expected visit highlights the growing importance of Pakistan-Iran relations, which have improved considerably following recent peace efforts. Analysts believe the trip could further strengthen bilateral ties and reinforce Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability.

Political observers also see this visit as an opportunity for Pakistan to maintain its influence in Middle Eastern diplomacy while supporting peaceful resolutions to conflicts.

If confirmed, PM Shehbaz’s visit to Iran will be one of the most significant diplomatic engagements of the year, reflecting Pakistan’s strategic role in the region.
