Cristiano Ronaldo has put aside one of football’s most intense rivalries to pay a warm tribute to Lionel Messi after the Argentine star announced his international retirement. The Portugal captain responded with genuine respect after Messi’s emotional farewell from the national team.

Messi, now 39, played his final match for Argentina on Tuesday. He delivered a brilliant performance in a 3-0 friendly win over Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. In front of more than 85,000 fans, he scored one goal and provided two assists. The night turned into a pure celebration of his extraordinary 21-year international career.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Messi shared his feelings. “Yesterday was my last game, and I already miss wearing the blue and white. I know I’m making the right decision,” he wrote. He described the journey as full of joy and some sadness, yet every step felt worthwhile. He specially remembered Diego Maradona, saying the legend helped Argentina from both earth and heaven.

Messi also thanked the clubs that respected his desire to represent his country whenever the national team called. The Inter Miami playmaker expressed deep gratitude to the fans. “I am grateful. I love you all very much. I’m going to miss you, and I will always thank you for having been by our side, by my side.”

During his long career with Argentina, Messi lifted the 2022 World Cup title and won the Copa America in both 2021 and 2024. He also guided the team to victory in the 2022 Finalissima. These achievements sealed his place as one of the greatest players in football history.

Ronaldo, often seen as Messi’s biggest rival for the title of greatest of their generation, chose to set the competition aside. The 41-year-old Portuguese star replied to Messi’s post with clear admiration. “Leo, after so many years of defending your country, you’ve made history that will last forever. I have the utmost respect for what you’ve accomplished with Argentina. A hug,” Ronaldo wrote.

While Ronaldo currently faces his own challenges with the Portugal national team, his message to Messi stood out for its warmth and class. The tribute shows that even the fiercest football rivalry can give way to mutual respect when a legendary chapter comes to a close.
