US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attack any Nato country. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump firmly declared that Putin has no plans to target Nato territory.
The comments came after media reports claimed CIA Director John Ratcliffe flew to Moscow earlier this week to deliver a warning against such an attack. Trump rejected that interpretation. He told Axios in a phone interview that Ratcliffe’s trip was a routine meeting with his Russian counterpart, something that happens once or twice a year because of their good working relationship.
“There was no message, and there was nothing unusual,” Trump said. He described the visit as standard intelligence contact rather than a special diplomatic warning mission.
The Wall Street Journal had reported on Wednesday that Ratcliffe travelled to Russia specifically to caution Moscow against any operation aimed at a Nato member. Two sources familiar with the matter later confirmed to Reuters that the possibility of a Russian move against Nato was raised during the talks. However, they noted that several other topics were also discussed, including Russia’s support for Iran, which remains a point of tension with the United States.
Western intelligence agencies have for years tracked Russian sabotage and grey-zone activities across Europe. These actions usually stay below the level of open war and are designed to weaken Nato unity and reduce support for Ukraine. One scenario that officials have monitored involves Russia using a Ukrainian drone in a false-flag attack on a country in eastern or northeastern Europe to hide Moscow’s role.
Despite these concerns, Trump expressed full confidence that Putin will not cross the line into a direct Nato confrontation. His remarks aim to calm nerves in Europe while also pushing back against the idea that the CIA trip carried any urgent warning.
The exchange highlights ongoing differences in how Washington and Moscow manage their intelligence contacts and public messaging. With the conflict in Ukraine still unresolved and tensions high, Trump’s clear statement that Putin will not attack Nato territory is intended to lower the temperature even as intelligence channels continue their regular work.
