In a powerful and emotional statement, Pope Leo XIV strongly criticized global leaders for fueling conflicts and spending billions on wars, calling them “tyrants” who are damaging the world. His remarks came during a visit to Bamenda, shortly after public criticism from Donald Trump intensified tensions.

Speaking at a gathering focused on peace and justice, the pope warned that the world is being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants” who prioritize destruction over development. He highlighted the harsh reality that billions of dollars are spent on warfare, while essential sectors like education, healthcare, and recovery are neglected.

The pope also condemned leaders who misuse religion to justify violence, stating that invoking God’s name for political or military gain is a dangerous manipulation. He emphasized that such actions distort faith and lead to further division and suffering. His message called for a “decisive change of course” to restore peace and moral responsibility.

The remarks follow a recent online attack by Donald Trump, who criticized the pope’s stance on global issues. Despite this, Pope Leo has chosen not to directly respond, instead continuing to speak out against ongoing conflicts, including tensions involving Iran.

During his visit, the pope also addressed issues within Cameroon, urging leaders to tackle corruption and resist influence from powerful external forces. He highlighted the ongoing regional conflict, which has caused thousands of deaths and displaced many people over the years.

In a message of hope, the pope encouraged unity among communities and praised the fact that the conflict has not turned into a religious war. He expressed optimism that religious leaders can play a key role in peacebuilding.

His visit also coincided with a temporary ceasefire, offering a moment of relief for civilians. Overall, the pope’s message serves as a strong reminder that peace, compassion, and responsible leadership are urgently needed in today’s world.
