Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has underlined the critical role of the European Union’s GSP Plus trade scheme for Pakistan’s economic growth, job creation and exports. He made these remarks while seeking deeper ties with the European bloc during a key meeting in New York.
On the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif held talks with European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to building a broader and stronger partnership with the European Union.
He pledged full implementation of the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan. The leaders reviewed the entire range of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction at the rising pace of high-level exchanges between the two sides. Shehbaz stressed that regular leadership-level contacts remain essential to give clear direction and fresh momentum to the relationship.
The prime minister specifically highlighted how the GSP Plus framework supports Pakistan’s economy. He said the scheme plays a vital part in generating employment and expanding trade with the European market. He reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to continued engagement under this preferential trade arrangement.
Both sides also discussed regional and global issues. They reaffirmed the value of dialogue, diplomacy, international law and peaceful settlement of disputes. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU values its partnership with Pakistan. She noted that the Strategic Engagement Plan shows the wide scope of ties and a shared focus on democracy, the rule of law, human rights and civic space.
Von der Leyen also thanked Shehbaz for Pakistan’s recent mediation efforts between the United States and Iran. She praised Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting de-escalation and peaceful conflict resolution. The two sides explored further cooperation on trade and ways to address illegal migration.
Shehbaz Sharif renewed his invitation to the European Council and Commission presidents to visit Pakistan. He expressed the desire to work closely with EU leadership for a mutually beneficial and lasting partnership.
The meeting reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic links with Europe at a time when trade preferences under GSP Plus remain highly important for the country’s development goals.
