Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and strongly condemned the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. Both leaders agreed to work very closely to maintain regional peace, security, and the smooth flow of maritime trade.
During the call, PM Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s complete solidarity with Saudi Arabia at this critical time. He stated that he, along with Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, and the entire Pakistani nation, stands firmly with the Saudi leadership and people.
The latest tensions escalated after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claimed missile and drone strikes on Saudi tankers, including the Encelia and Layla. Saudi Arabia confirmed that the tanker Encelia was hit, while a British naval monitor reported a vessel being struck by a projectile, causing a fire onboard. The Houthis also threatened to blockade Saudi ports, raising serious concerns about the safety of key shipping routes like the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz.
PM Shehbaz Sharif described the Houthi attacks as unacceptable violations of international law. He emphasized that such actions threaten freedom of navigation and undermine regional stability. Pakistan had earlier strongly condemned these threats through its Foreign Office, calling them dangerous to global commerce and the rules-based maritime order.
Both countries agreed to enhance coordination to ensure peace and the uninterrupted flow of lawful maritime commerce in the Red Sea and surrounding areas. This strong diplomatic engagement highlights the deep and longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
