Norway produced one of the biggest shocks of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 to reach their first ever World Cup quarterfinal. Erling Haaland scored two late goals, while goalkeeper Orjan Nyland delivered a remarkable performance to eliminate the five time world champions.
Brazil had several opportunities to take control of the match but failed to capitalize. In the first half, Bruno Guimaraes missed a penalty after Nyland made an outstanding save. The Norwegian goalkeeper continued his heroics by denying several Brazilian attacks throughout the match.
After a tightly contested encounter, Haaland finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a powerful header from an Andreas Schjelderup cross. The Manchester City striker struck again in the closing minutes, firing a low shot into the corner to give Norway a comfortable two goal advantage.
Brazil managed to pull one goal back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty after a foul on Casemiro. However, it proved to be only a consolation as Norway held on to secure a historic victory.
The defeat marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and extends their disappointing record of being eliminated by European teams in six consecutive tournaments. Despite appointing Carlo Ancelotti to lead the national team, Brazil’s quest to end its long World Cup title drought continues.
For Norway, the victory is one of the greatest moments in the nation’s football history. Haaland’s two goals also took his tournament tally to seven, drawing level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Following the final whistle, an emotional Neymar was seen in tears, raising speculation that this may have been his final appearance for Brazil at the FIFA World Cup. Norway will now face either Mexico or England in the quarterfinals as they continue their dream tournament.
