The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has received 287 nominations, according to the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The list includes 208 individuals and 79 organisations, showing a wide range of people and groups being considered for one of the world’s most respected awards.
Kristian Berg Harpviken, who became secretary of the committee in January 2025, said he was surprised by how much the nomination list changes each year. He noted that many of this year’s candidates are new compared to the previous year. According to him, the prize continues to hold strong importance, especially at a time when global conflicts are increasing and international cooperation is facing pressure.
One major point of interest is whether US President Donald Trump is among the nominees. Leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have publicly said they nominated him for the 2026 prize. However, the Nobel Committee does not confirm individual nominations because nominee names remain secret for 50 years. Harpviken also made it clear that being nominated does not mean the committee supports or endorses a candidate.
Thousands of qualified people around the world can submit nominations. These include government officials, members of parliament, current heads of state, university professors, and former Nobel Peace Prize winners.
Several other names are also being discussed by observers and betting platforms. Possible candidates include Yulia Navalnaya, wife of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Pope Leo, and Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, a volunteer aid group.
The committee also expressed deep concern for Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. Her health has reportedly worsened after a heart attack in prison, and supporters say her life may be in danger. Harpviken urged Iranian authorities to release her so she can receive proper medical care.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on October 9, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10.
