The federal government has directed all relevant authorities to remain on high alert as monsoon rains continue to increase the risk of flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) across Pakistan. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Emergency Response Committee (ERC) held at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters in Islamabad.

The meeting, chaired remotely by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, was attended by Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, provincial chief secretaries, and disaster management officials. Participants reviewed the country’s preparedness plans and discussed measures to strengthen emergency response during the Monsoon 2026 season.

Officials emphasized the need for continuous coordination between federal, provincial, and district authorities to ensure rapid deployment of resources and timely implementation of contingency plans. Special attention is being given to flood prone areas, urban centres, coastal regions, hill torrents, and glacier fed valleys, where the threat of severe weather remains significantly high.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has also issued a public advisory urging tourists and non essential travellers to avoid northern travel routes from July 10 to July 14 due to the increased danger of glacial floods and landslides. Authorities warned that rising temperatures combined with heavy rainfall could trigger GLOFs, sudden river surges, rockfalls, and debris flows in mountainous regions.

According to the advisory, several locations in Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir have been identified as high risk zones. Areas including Badswat, Ashkoman, Yasin, Khaplu, Hisper Hoper, and Gultang are particularly vulnerable to glacial flooding.

The NDMA also highlighted major road networks, including the Jaglot Skardu Road, Hunza Gojal Highway, Gilgit Ghizer Road, and routes leading to Naltar, Bagrot, and Hermosh, as locations where landslides and flooding could disrupt travel.

Authorities have advised the public to stay away from glacial lakes, river channels, and landslide prone roads while closely following official weather updates. Emergency response teams have been directed to remain fully prepared to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure throughout the ongoing monsoon season.
