Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni says he wants his team to be remembered for its never give up spirit as the defending champions prepare for a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter final against Switzerland.
Argentina have impressed throughout the tournament, finishing the group stage with ease before overcoming determined challenges from Cape Verde and Egypt in the knockout rounds. The South American giants are now unbeaten in 11 consecutive World Cup matches and are aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back to back World Cup titles.
Speaking before Saturday’s quarter final in Kansas City, Scaloni said the team’s greatest achievement should not only be winning matches but also inspiring supporters through their determination and passion.
The Argentina coach revealed that watching a 10 year old fan passionately support the national team deeply moved him. He explained that football is about creating unforgettable emotions and connecting with fans, adding that he hopes this generation will leave behind a legacy of resilience, commitment, and belief.
Another major talking point ahead of the match is Lionel Messi, who returns to the same stadium where he scored a memorable hat trick against Algeria earlier in the tournament. The Inter Miami star currently shares the race for the Golden Boot with Kylian Mbappe, having scored eight goals, while also becoming the highest scorer in World Cup history with 21 career goals.
Despite Messi missing two penalties during the tournament, Scaloni made it clear that his captain will continue taking spot kicks whenever he chooses. The coach praised the 39 year old superstar, insisting that Messi remains the world’s best player and can continue performing at the highest level for as long as he wishes.
Scaloni also warned against underestimating Switzerland, praising captain Granit Xhaka and the European side after their impressive victory over Colombia. If Argentina secure another win, they will face either England or Norway in the World Cup semi finals.
