Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged that Spain were the deserved winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following his side’s 1-0 extra time defeat in the final. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Scaloni praised his players for their determination and said reaching a second consecutive World Cup final remains a remarkable achievement.
Spain secured the championship after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the second period of extra time, breaking the resistance of a 10 man Argentina side at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The victory denied Argentina the chance to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back to back FIFA World Cup titles.
Speaking after the match, Scaloni admitted that Spain had been the stronger team throughout the final. He said there was no shame in accepting defeat and emphasized that his players had given everything on the pitch.
“We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat,” Scaloni said. “Today we showed that we know how to lose. We accept the result, but we will always be proud of everything this team achieved to reach this stage.”
The Argentine coach became emotional during his post match press conference, thanking the players, coaching staff, and supporters for their unwavering commitment throughout the tournament. He praised the team’s fighting spirit and said their performances had set an example for the nation.
Scaloni also highlighted the importance of appreciating Argentina’s journey to another World Cup final, noting that reaching the championship match is an achievement that deserves significant recognition. While expressing sadness over the defeat, he said he felt immense gratitude for his squad’s efforts.
The 48 year old coach also hinted that his future with the national team remains uncertain. Although reports in Argentina suggest he has verbally agreed to stay until the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Scaloni said he intends to honour his current contract, which expires in December, before making a final decision about continuing in the role.
