British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing political uncertainty as pressure mounts within the governing Labour Party for him to step aside. The debate over his future intensified following Andy Burnham’s strong victory in a parliamentary by-election, which has strengthened calls for a change in leadership.

Reports suggest that Starmer is spending time discussing his next move with family members and close allies. According to sources familiar with the situation, he could decide within days whether to remain in office and contest a potential leadership challenge or begin preparations for an orderly departure from Downing Street.

Burnham’s decisive success in northwestern England has encouraged many Labour lawmakers and several ministers to privately urge Starmer to establish a timetable for stepping down. Supporters of Burnham believe a managed transition could help avoid a divisive leadership contest that may further weaken the party.

Starmer has struggled with declining approval ratings in recent months. Labour suffered significant setbacks during local elections earlier this year, increasing concerns among party members about its long term electoral prospects. Surveys conducted among Labour supporters indicate that Burnham would likely perform strongly if a formal leadership election were held.

Adding another layer to the political pressure, US President Donald Trump claimed on social media that Starmer would eventually resign as prime minister. Trump also criticized Starmer’s handling of immigration policies and energy production in the North Sea.

Media reports indicate that senior cabinet members have also expressed concerns regarding Starmer’s position. It has been reported that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper privately encouraged him to consider stepping aside, although her office has not publicly commented on the matter.

Despite the growing calls for change, Starmer recently stated that he would participate in any leadership contest and believes his 2024 election victory gives him a mandate to continue governing until 2029. However, Labour figures increasingly acknowledge that his leadership now faces its most serious challenge since taking office, leaving uncertainty over whether he will fight to remain prime minister or oversee a smooth transfer of power.
