Islamabad, Rawalpindi and several northern areas are facing the threat of heavy rain and possible flooding as the monsoon system continues to affect the region. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, wind and thunderstorms across parts of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Punjab, Pothohar, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
The twin cities experienced intermittent rainfall for the second consecutive day, prompting WASA teams to remain active in low-lying areas. However, accumulated rainwater created problems at Jamia Girls Higher Secondary School in Rawalpindi, where flooding disrupted classes and made movement difficult for students.
Authorities also recovered the body of a girl who reportedly drowned in a Rawalpindi stormwater drain on Monday. Rescue officials said her dupatta and slippers were found near Gulberg Green, while CCTV footage related to the incident has also surfaced.
The PMD has warned that heavy rainfall during September 3 and 4 could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot. Flash flooding is also possible in local streams and nullahs across Kashmir, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the Pothohar region.
Residents in hilly areas have additionally been advised to remain alert because landslides may occur in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, while Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan may also receive rainfall. Karachi and other coastal areas of Sindh could experience drizzle under partly cloudy conditions.
During the past 24 hours, Islamabad’s Saidpur recorded 45mm of rain, the highest in the capital, followed by Islamabad City with 28mm and the Airport with 12mm. Saidu Sharif received 35mm, while Rawalpindi’s New Kattarian recorded 13mm.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel through flood-prone areas and remain updated with official weather alerts.
