The political landscape of Gilgit-Baltistan is taking shape following the recently concluded assembly elections, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerging as the largest political force based on unofficial and preliminary results. According to early counts, the PPP secured 10 seats out of the 24 constituencies contested, positioning itself as the leading party in the region.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) followed with four seats, while independent candidates performed strongly by winning seven constituencies. The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) managed to secure one seat. Since no party achieved a clear majority, political insiders suggest that a PPP-PML-N coalition government is the most likely outcome.

Sources familiar with ongoing discussions indicate that the proposed alliance may follow a power-sharing arrangement similar to previous coalition models. Under this formula, the Chief Minister’s office is expected to go to the PPP, while the Governor’s position could be allocated to the PML-N. Reports also suggest that cabinet portfolios may be distributed under a 60-40 formula between the two parties.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for conducting peaceful elections and praised the PPP for emerging as the largest party. He also extended congratulations to President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for the party’s electoral performance.

Despite the election results, concerns regarding transparency have surfaced. The PPP, PTI, and JUI-F raised objections over alleged delays in result announcements, issues related to Form-45, and claims of electoral irregularities. Several political leaders demanded greater transparency and urged election authorities to ensure that public votes are accurately reflected in the final results.

As political negotiations continue, attention is now focused on coalition talks that will determine the future government in Gilgit-Baltistan. The coming days are expected to be crucial as parties work toward forming a stable administration for the region.
