A passenger train travelling between Rouen and Caen in northern France derailed on Friday evening, leaving 44 people injured. One 18-year-old woman was airlifted in critical condition after the incident near the town of Cléon in Normandy. The train was carrying about 180 passengers when it left the tracks at around 7:30 pm local time.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed that emergency crews were quickly sent to the scene to help passengers and treat the injured. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the train derailment. A police spokesperson said the train may have struck an unidentified object on the tracks. Both SNCF and police have opened a full investigation.

Rouen prosecutor Sebastien Gallois reported that 44 people suffered injuries. Tests showed the train driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A large-scale emergency response was activated, with more than 130 firefighters, five medical teams and dozens of vehicles arriving at the site. The minister later noted that around 140 firefighters took part in the operation.

One passenger, 24-year-old Louis, described a series of strong jolts that grew more violent. He said he could no longer stay in his seat as windows partially shattered and stones from the track flew into the carriage. “It was really shocking. I’m still shaking,” he told local radio.

SNCF Réseau, which manages France’s rail network, suspended traffic on the affected line and cut power to the tracks so rescue teams could work safely. Services between Rouen and Caen, as well as between Caen and Le Havre, were halted. Replacement buses were arranged for passengers. The Seine-Maritime prefecture asked the public to stay away from the area while emergency workers and investigators remained on site.

Rail officials and police continue to examine what caused the train to leave the rails. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to understand the circumstances of the accident and ensure safety on the line.
