The United States government has announced a major relief for international football supporters ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup by temporarily removing visa bond requirements for eligible fans from 50 countries. The decision was confirmed by the administration of President Donald Trump as preparations continue for one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Previously, travellers from certain countries were required to pay visa deposits ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 before receiving a tourist visa for the United States. The policy was introduced to reduce visa overstays, with the amount refunded after visitors left the country. However, officials have now confirmed that qualifying World Cup fans will no longer need to pay these deposits.

According to Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar, the waiver applies to supporters who purchased World Cup tickets and registered through the FIFA PASS programme before April 15, 2026. The exemption will also benefit eligible players, coaches and team staff travelling for the tournament.

Several African nations affected by the visa bond programme have already qualified for the tournament, including Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Cape Verde and Ivory Coast.

The tournament will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico during June and July 2026. The opening match is scheduled for June 11 in Mexico, while the final will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

Despite the waiver, some immigration restrictions remain in place for certain countries. Human rights organisations have also raised concerns regarding immigration enforcement during the tournament. However, US officials have assured visitors with legal documentation that they will face no issues while attending the matches.
