Vehicle Attack at Berlin Festival Kills One and Injures Many
A vehicle drove into a crowd near Berlin’s annual Pride celebrations on Saturday evening, killing one person and injuring 17 others. Several of the wounded remain in serious or life-threatening condition. The incident occurred close to the Brandenburg Gate in the city’s central Tiergarten park and brought the large public gathering to an abrupt halt.
Police said the vehicle entered the park around 10 pm local time, struck multiple people, and finally came to a stop after hitting a tree. Officers found the vehicle empty and immediately launched a search for the person or people responsible. A police spokesperson confirmed that a suspected perpetrator has been identified and that efforts to arrest him are underway.
Among the injured, eight people suffered serious wounds. Of those, three were in life-threatening condition, according to fire brigade officials. Emergency services flooded the area with a large number of vehicles as first responders treated the wounded at the scene.
The attack took place during Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ events. Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered peacefully in the German capital for the annual parade and related celebrations before the violence forced organizers to call off the rest of the program. One attendee, Julian Miethig, described the day as one of the worst for the queer community and said he was deeply shocked.
Police described the vehicle as white and said it could have been a car, minivan, or minibus. Witnesses reported that a man left the vehicle and fled on foot. Many details about the motive and exact sequence of events remain unclear as investigators continue their work.
Christopher Street Day has been held in Berlin since 1979 and has grown into a major cultural and political event that combines a parade with calls for equality and protection against discrimination. The sudden violence has left the community shaken and has drawn comparisons to other recent vehicle incidents in German cities.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious while the manhunt proceeds and further information is gathered.
