US President Donald Trump has thanked FIFA after the governing body suspended the red card ban issued to Folarin Balogun, allowing the USA striker to play in the team’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
Balogun had initially been ruled out of the knockout match after receiving a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The striker was sent off for stepping on the foot of defender Tarik Muharemovic, resulting in an automatic one match suspension.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the suspension of the match ban would be placed on hold for a one year probationary period under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The decision means Balogun is now eligible to feature in one of the USA’s biggest matches of the tournament.
Reacting to the announcement, President Trump praised FIFA’s decision on his Truth Social platform, saying the organization had corrected what he described as a great injustice. Trump thanked FIFA for reversing the punishment and clearing the way for Balogun’s return.
The decision follows public support from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had urged FIFA to overturn the red card shortly after the incident. Rubio argued that the punishment was too harsh and called for the striker to remain available for the knockout stages.
Balogun has been one of the United States’ most influential players during the tournament, and his availability is expected to provide a significant boost as the team prepares to face Belgium. His return strengthens the American attack as the co hosts aim to continue their impressive FIFA World Cup campaign.
With the suspension lifted, all attention now turns to the highly anticipated Round of 16 encounter, where the USA will look to book a place in the quarterfinals with Balogun back in the starting lineup.
