A devastating maritime tragedy unfolded in the San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island on Tuesday, leaving one person dead and two others missing after a triple-deck pontoon boat capsized. The vessel, carrying nineteen passengers, flipped and became almost completely submerged before eventually sinking below the chilly waters. Local emergency agencies immediately launched a massive search-and-rescue operation to locate the missing individuals.

The tragic Alcatraz boat accident triggered an immediate, coordinated response from the San Francisco Fire Department and the United States Coast Guard. First responders arrived swiftly at the scene to find the pleasure craft mostly underwater with its motor still running and actively leaking fuel. Rescue teams quickly pulled several victims from the frigid bay waters. Unfortunately, one severely injured individual passed away despite receiving prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation from emergency crews on the dock. Out of the nineteen people on board, sixteen were successfully pulled from the bay, with thirteen safely reaching the shore and three transported to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Search crews deployed eleven rescue vessels alongside professional divers and helicopters to scour the bay for the remaining missing passengers. While weather conditions appeared pleasant and sunny, officials noted that powerful eastbound currents created highly challenging conditions, generating noticeable whitecaps. These strong, cold currents historically made Alcatraz Island an escape-proof federal prison site, and they continue to complicate modern rescue efforts.

The exact cause of the sudden capsize remains under investigation. Although initial reports mistakenly pointed to a major vessel fire, Fire Chief Dean Crispen clarified that there was absolutely no evidence of a blaze on board. Emergency responders are working relentlessly, vowing to continue the search for the missing passengers as long as possible. This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the deceptive dangers lurking beneath the scenic waters of the bay.
