Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed General Aamer Raza as the new Commander of the National Strategic Command. The senior officer, who was serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Pakistan Army, has been promoted to the rank of four-star general and given this critical new responsibility.
In an official statement, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the premier met General Aamer Raza in Islamabad on July 24, 2026. During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the general on his promotion and appointment. He wished him success in handling this important national duty.
This development comes after important changes in Pakistan’s military structure. The National Strategic Command post was created following the passage of the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025. The same legislation also established the position of Chief of Defence Forces, which Field Marshal Asim Munir now holds. The creation of this new command replaced the earlier Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee role.
General Aamer Raza will serve a three-year term in this position. According to the law, the prime minister appoints the commander from among serving Pakistan Army generals on the recommendation of the Chief of the Army Staff, who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces.
This appointment highlights Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its strategic leadership and modernize defense structures. General Aamer Raza, known for his distinguished service and decorated with HI(M) and SBt, brings vast experience to this vital role. The National Strategic Command is expected to play a key part in overseeing Pakistan’s strategic assets and ensuring coordinated defense preparedness across the armed forces.
Military analysts see this move as part of broader reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and command clarity in the country’s defense framework. The smooth transition and clear legal backing for the new post reflect the government’s focus on institutional strengthening.
The nation watches with interest as General Aamer Raza takes charge of this prestigious assignment. His leadership will be crucial in addressing current and future strategic challenges facing Pakistan.
