The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) has officially demanded that FIFA provide strict guarantees regarding the treatment of its delegation ahead of the World Cup in June. FFIRI chief Mehdi Taj stated that the governing body must ensure the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is not insulted or targeted by authorities while the team is in the United States. This demand follows a recent incident where the Iranian delegation turned back from the Canadian border, citing disrespectful treatment by immigration officials.

The controversy intensified after Canada’s immigration minister confirmed that Mehdi Taj’s visa was cancelled mid-flight due to his historical links with the IRGC. Both Canada and the United States have designated the elite military force as a “terrorist entity,” leading to significant diplomatic friction. With the World Cup being co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, the Iranian federation is seeking “cast-iron guarantees” that their national symbols and military institutions will be respected throughout the tournament.

Despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions, FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom has expressed regret over the situation in Canada and invited the Iranian delegation to Zurich for a high-level meeting. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously clarified that while players are welcome, individuals with active ties to the IRGC will not be granted entry. In response, Mehdi Taj argued that as the tournament’s official host, FIFA is responsible for ensuring the peaceful participation of all qualified nations, regardless of American political stances.

Iran is currently scheduled to play crucial group matches in Los Angeles and Seattle. However, their participation remains clouded by the broader regional conflict and the suspension of domestic football within the Islamic Republic. As the team continues its training camp in Tehran, the federation remains hopeful of securing a friendly match in Turkiye to maintain match fitness. The outcome of the upcoming meeting in Zurich will likely determine whether the Iranian squad ultimately travels to North America or if the diplomatic standoff forces a withdrawal.
