In a groundbreaking move toward digital transformation, Islamabad International Airport has officially become Pakistan’s first fully cashless airport. This initiative marks a significant shift in how airport services operate, aiming to improve passenger convenience, transparency, and overall efficiency.

Under the new system, all payments within the airport premises are now processed through digital platforms. Travelers can pay for airline tickets, car parking, food outlets, retail shops, and duty free stores using digital wallets, QR codes, mobile banking apps, as well as debit and credit cards. The transition eliminates the need for physical cash, creating a smoother and more secure payment environment for passengers.

Airport officials stated that this initiative is designed to modernize airport services and enhance the travel experience. Chief Operating Officer and Airport Manager Aftab Gilani shared that a dedicated mobile application has also been introduced. This app allows passengers to track lost luggage from anywhere in the world, offering greater peace of mind and improved customer support.

According to authorities, the introduction of a digital payment system and advanced baggage tracking facility is expected to boost the airport’s international reputation and service standards. Officials believe this transformation will strengthen the airport’s global standing and improve its overall performance ratings.

The development follows the federal government’s recent decision to include the airport in its active privatisation programme. The Ministry of Privatisation confirmed that this move aligns with similar privatisation efforts involving Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.

Senior Joint Director Commercial Malik Amjad described the project as a major milestone in upgrading airport infrastructure and embracing modern technology. With this step, Islamabad International Airport positions itself at the forefront of Pakistan’s aviation modernization journey.
