The Pakistan government is expected to announce a new petroleum price adjustment for the upcoming fortnight starting February 16, according to industry insiders. Initial estimates suggest a noticeable increase in petrol and diesel prices, which could directly affect daily commuters, transporters, and households already managing rising living costs.

Reports indicate that the petrol price may increase by Rs4.39 per litre, potentially raising the rate to around Rs257.56 per litre. Similarly, high speed diesel is also expected to see an increase of about Rs5.40 per litre, bringing its estimated price close to Rs273.78 per litre. Other fuel products, including kerosene oil and light diesel oil, could also become more expensive with anticipated hikes of Rs4 and Rs6.55 per litre respectively.

The final decision will be made by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority after consultations with the Ministry of Finance and the prime minister. Officials usually review global oil prices, currency fluctuations, and domestic fiscal policies before confirming the revised rates.

Fuel price changes have a direct impact on everyday life. Petrol is widely used by individuals driving small cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws, which means any increase can raise transportation expenses for middle and lower income families. Meanwhile, high speed diesel plays a critical role in heavy transport, public buses, and agricultural machinery, making it an important factor in overall inflation.

When diesel prices rise, it often leads to higher food and vegetable prices because transportation and farming costs increase. Economists warn that consistent increases in fuel costs can contribute to broader inflationary pressure, affecting multiple sectors across the economy.

Citizens are now waiting for the official notification, as the upcoming decision could shape both transport costs and household budgets for the coming weeks.
