A sudden and intense grass fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta claimed the lives of four soldiers and left dozens injured on Saturday afternoon. Officials confirmed that the blaze began as a small smouldering fire in the training area before strong winds rapidly turned it into a fast moving wall of flames.

Major General Wade Rutland, commander of 1st Canadian Division, explained that winds reached up to 96 kilometres per hour and pushed the fire forward at an alarming speed. He said the flames advanced one kilometre in just 30 to 60 seconds, something he had never witnessed before. At the time of the incident, 85 soldiers from the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry were conducting high intensity combat training with live munitions. The troops were preparing for an upcoming deployment to Latvia.

The four soldiers who lost their lives have been identified as Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Aidan Goulding and Private Hayden Lykkemark. Prime Minister Mark Carney called the event one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the Canadian military on home soil. He ordered flags on federal buildings across the country lowered to half staff in honour of the fallen. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith noted that many of the injured will need weeks or even months of specialised intensive care.

In total, 39 people were taken to hospitals. Nineteen remain in critical condition. Patients are receiving treatment in Edmonton, Wainwright, Calgary and Red Deer. Twenty two ground ambulances and eight air ambulances from Edmonton and Saskatoon responded to the mass casualty scene. Military search and rescue technicians also parachuted into the area to assist.

Firefighters from both military and civilian crews battled the flames through the night under extremely difficult conditions. Officials confirmed the fire crossed the base fence into the nearby district, yet no evacuation orders were issued for the town of Wainwright. The investigation into the exact cause is ongoing. Authorities have ruled out any link to oil and gas infrastructure or outside interference.
