Lahore’s First Tram Service to Launch in 2026

The Punjab government has announced an ambitious plan to introduce Lahore’s first-ever tram service, slated to begin operations in February 2026. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar shared the exciting news at 4:19 PM PKT today, confirming a successful test run of the prototype. The tram will connect Thokar to Harbanspura, designed to carry 270 passengers per trip. This $3 million project was developed with technical support from Punjab NESPAK and PMA officials, inspired by a recent study tour to China to explore cutting-edge transport systems.

The tram service promises a modern, eco-friendly travel option for Lahoris, aiming to reduce the city’s heavy reliance on motorcycles and private cars. Beyond Lahore, the government revealed plans for metro train projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is expected to serve 300,000 passengers daily, while the Gujranwala metro will accommodate 140,000 per day. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to revolutionize public transport across Punjab, addressing urban mobility challenges.

Officials emphasized that these projects will ease traffic congestion and combat air pollution, a pressing issue in the province’s cities. By offering reliable, affordable, and sustainable transport, the government hopes to encourage a shift from private vehicles, promoting a greener environment. The announcement has sparked enthusiasm among residents, with many viewing it as a step toward a modernized Punjab.

The minister stressed that these efforts will enhance quality of life, boost economic activity, and align the province with global transport standards. With construction underway, the projects are seen as a commitment to building a cleaner, more efficient future for Punjab’s citizens.
