Popular committees that manage displacement camps and shelters in Gaza issued the alert late on Monday. These groups include local NGOs and charities. A source confirmed the message was coordinated with Hamas authorities.
The statement explained their goal clearly. They work hard on the ground to stop the practice. It is not meant to take away the little joy left for children who already lack safe places to play. The aim is simply to protect innocent lives.
In 2018, people in Gaza launched burning balloons and kites into Israel. Those actions sparked fires across large areas of fields and farmland. Organizers described it as a protest against the blockade of the Hamas-run territory.
Over the past month, several kites without any reported fire materials drifted from Gaza into Israel. The sight alarmed residents living in nearby villages.
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a clear warning. He said Hamas must stop at once. Anyone responsible for launching kites, balloons or drones toward Israel would face targeted action. Areas used for such launches would also receive evacuation orders.
One mother from Gaza City, who spoke with Reuters through a messaging app, shared her fear. Umm Mohammed said her 10-year-old son Ahmed and other street children used to fly kites every summer for fun. She will no longer allow it because she worries he could get hurt.
A senior Israeli defence official claimed Hamas is encouraging the kite flying to provoke Israel. A Hamas official rejected this view. He told Reuters the group has already complained to ceasefire mediators. They believe Israel is inventing excuses to keep the fighting going in Gaza.
Israel has also raised the issue with US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. That body oversees the 2025 Gaza ceasefire agreement. According to a second Israeli official, the complaint focused on the recent kite activity.
The situation leaves families in a difficult position. Simple childhood activities now carry serious risks amid ongoing tension.
