Govt announces public holiday for Eid Milad un Nabi on August 26

The federal government has officially declared Wednesday, August 26, as a public holiday across Pakistan to mark Eid Milad un Nabi. The Cabinet Division issued the notification after receiving approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

This decision comes on the occasion of the 12th of Rabi ul Awal, the day when Muslims around the world commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The Central Ruet e Hilal Committee had earlier confirmed that the Rabi ul Awal moon was not sighted last week. As a result, the auspicious day was fixed for the coming Wednesday.

The Sindh government has also followed the federal announcement and declared a public holiday in the province on the same date. Officials confirmed that all government offices, educational institutions and most private organisations will remain closed to allow citizens to observe the day with full devotion.

Eid Milad un Nabi holds deep spiritual importance for Muslims. On this day, the faithful engage in special prayers, recite Naat, distribute charity and renew their commitment to follow the noble teachings of the Holy Prophet. His life continues to serve as a guiding light of compassion, justice and mercy for humanity.

Across the country, mosques and homes are expected to be decorated with colourful lights and green flags. Religious gatherings, processions and seminars will take place in major cities. Many people will visit the poor and needy to share food and gifts as a gesture of love and solidarity.

The timely announcement by the government allows families and communities enough time to prepare for the celebrations. It also ensures that people can fully participate in the religious activities without any official work pressure. Similar holidays have been observed in previous years to honour this significant occasion in the Islamic calendar.

Citizens have welcomed the decision, saying it reflects the government’s respect for religious sentiments. With the holiday now confirmed, preparations for Eid Milad un Nabi are expected to gain momentum in the coming days as the nation comes together in remembrance and reverence.
