The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) advisory for several northern regions of Pakistan after rising temperatures and intermittent rainfall increased the risk of glacier melting. Authorities have placed Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, and Mansehra on high alert to minimise the impact of any potential emergencies.
According to the PDMA, warmer weather is accelerating the melting of glaciers, causing glacial lakes to expand rapidly. If these lakes burst, they can release massive volumes of water within minutes, leading to flash floods capable of damaging roads, bridges, homes, and other critical infrastructure. Officials warned that such events pose a serious threat to both local communities and visitors travelling through mountainous areas.
The advisory comes at a time when thousands of tourists from across Pakistan are visiting the northern regions during the summer holidays. The PDMA has urged travellers to avoid unnecessary travel, camping, and trekking in locations identified as vulnerable to flooding. Visitors have also been encouraged to stay updated through official weather alerts before planning their trips.
District administrations have been instructed to continuously monitor high risk locations, issue timely public warnings, conduct evacuation drills, and ensure that emergency shelters are ready if required. Rescue teams and local authorities have also been directed to remain fully prepared for any sudden situation.
The PDMA further advised motorists to avoid attempting to cross fast flowing streams or flooded roads. Even shallow floodwater can carry enough force to sweep away vehicles, making such crossings extremely dangerous.
