The cricket world is mourning the loss of former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, who passed away at the age of 38 after battling a prolonged illness. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the heartbreaking news, paying tribute to one of the pioneers who helped transform Afghanistan into a respected force in international cricket.
Zadran had been fighting Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life threatening immune system disorder that causes severe inflammation and can damage multiple organs. According to reports, he had been receiving specialized medical treatment in the Delhi NCR region for several months. Although his health briefly improved after treatment, his condition worsened again, leading to his untimely passing.
Born on 8 July 1987 in Logar Province, Zadran became one of Afghanistan’s most recognizable cricketers. His aggressive left arm pace, determination, and ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs made him an important part of the national team during its rise from an Associate nation to becoming an ICC Full Member.
Zadran made his One Day International debut against the Netherlands in 2009, making an immediate impact by claiming 4 wickets for 24 runs. Over an international career spanning more than a decade, he represented Afghanistan in 44 ODIs and 36 T20 Internationals, collecting 43 ODI wickets and 37 T20I wickets.
One of his most memorable performances came during the 2010 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he dismissed legendary Indian batters Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, announcing Afghanistan’s arrival on the global stage. His finest achievement followed at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, where he finished as Afghanistan’s leading wicket taker with 10 wickets and struck the winning runs against Scotland, securing the country’s historic first ever World Cup victory.
The passing of Shapoor Zadran marks the end of an important chapter in Afghanistan cricket. His contributions, passion, and fighting spirit will continue to inspire future generations of Afghan cricketers.
