Severe storms, flooding, and landslides have caused widespread destruction across China, leaving dozens of people dead, forcing mass evacuations, and damaging thousands of acres of farmland. Rescue teams continue searching for missing residents as authorities warn that more heavy rainfall is expected in several regions over the coming days.
In the southern region of Guangxi, heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Maysak caused rivers to overflow, roads to flood, and a reservoir dam to collapse. Officials confirmed that six people lost their lives, while more than 130,000 residents were evacuated to safer locations. The powerful floodwaters affected over 40 rivers, destroyed infrastructure, and damaged nearly 13,000 acres of agricultural land, creating serious challenges for local communities.
Emergency crews have been deployed across the affected areas using inflatable rescue boats to reach stranded residents. The Chinese government has also delivered food supplies, raincoats, rubber boats, and other emergency relief materials to support rescue and recovery efforts. Authorities have maintained the second highest flood emergency response level as water levels continue rising across the region.
Officials warned that several rivers could exceed danger levels by more than six metres, increasing pressure on reservoirs and embankments already weakened by continuous rainfall. Engineers and emergency workers remain on high alert to prevent additional flooding and protect nearby communities.
Elsewhere, severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and tornadoes struck Hubei Province, killing 11 people and injuring more than 330 others. Thousands of homes suffered damage, while several buildings collapsed due to the extreme weather conditions.
In northwestern Gansu Province, the death toll from a devastating landslide has risen to 21 people after tons of earth buried a village earlier this week. Rescue operations have now concluded, while authorities continue investigating the cause of the disaster. The Chinese government has allocated 30 million yuan for reconstruction and recovery efforts.
With additional rainfall forecast, officials are urging residents to remain alert as emergency services continue responding to one of the country’s most severe weather disasters this year.
