New Zealand produced a brilliant all round performance to defeat England by 160 runs in the third Test at Trent Bridge, securing a 2 1 series victory and spoiling Ben Stokes’ final appearance in international cricket. The win marked New Zealand’s fourth Test series triumph in England and their first comeback series victory after losing the opening match since 1999.

England entered the final Test hoping to give captain Ben Stokes a memorable farewell after he announced his retirement from international cricket. However, the hosts struggled throughout the match as New Zealand dominated with both bat and ball. The defeat also highlighted England’s recent struggles, with the team now losing seven of their last nine Test matches.

The foundation of New Zealand’s success was laid in the first innings when Tom Latham scored 151 and Devon Conway added 157, sharing a remarkable 317 run opening partnership. Their efforts guided the visitors to a commanding total that placed England under pressure from the very beginning.

In the second innings, Daryl Mitchell displayed exceptional courage with an unbeaten 100, earning the Player of the Match award despite taking several painful blows from England’s fast bowlers. His determined knock helped New Zealand set England a challenging 373 run target.

England’s chase never gathered momentum. Although Ben Stokes entertained the crowd with a quick 30 runs from 20 balls, his early dismissal ended hopes of a dream farewell. Nathan Smith, Mitchell Santner, and the New Zealand bowling attack kept the pressure on, while outstanding fielding produced two crucial run outs that effectively ended England’s resistance. Jamie Smith fought hard with a valuable 60, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Despite missing key bowlers through injuries and concussion, New Zealand showcased outstanding teamwork and resilience. The impressive performances of Zak Foulkes, Nathan Smith, and Mitchell Santner highlighted the squad’s depth and determination.

The victory will be remembered as one of New Zealand’s finest overseas achievements, while England began a new chapter following Ben Stokes’ retirement, bringing an end to one of the most influential careers in modern Test cricket.
