The United States and Iran have agreed to temporarily halt military attacks and restart diplomatic discussions in an effort to reduce tensions in the Gulf region. According to a US official, both countries have decided to pause hostilities while technical negotiations continue under a previously agreed 14 point memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The agreement is expected to allow the Strait of Hormuz to remain open for international shipping, helping restore confidence in one of the world’s most important energy routes. Officials stated that technical discussions will continue to address all aspects of the agreement, while both sides refrain from further military action.
The latest development comes after several days of escalating violence. The situation worsened when an Iranian projectile struck a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a series of retaliatory attacks. Iran later launched missiles and drones targeting US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, claiming the United States had violated the ceasefire agreement.
US officials confirmed that the attacks targeted American bases but reported no major damage or casualties. Kuwait also stated that its air defense systems successfully intercepted ballistic missiles without significant impact. Meanwhile, Bahrain reported damage to a residential building caused by an Iranian strike, although no injuries were recorded.
Before the latest agreement, President Donald Trump warned that the United States could take stronger military action if Iran failed to honor the ceasefire. His comments followed renewed fighting that threatened to derail diplomatic progress.
Negotiations between both countries are expected to resume in Qatar, where officials hope to address key issues, including regional security, freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s nuclear program. Despite the renewed commitment to diplomacy, both governments continue to accuse each other of violating previous agreements, leaving uncertainty over whether the fragile peace can hold.
