Pakistan has once again emerged as an important diplomatic bridge as United States and Iranian delegations met Pakistani mediators in Switzerland ahead of highly anticipated technical talks aimed at strengthening a recently signed peace agreement. The discussions, being held under the banner of the Lake Lucerne Summit, are expected to continue for four days and are being closely watched by the international community.
The talks follow the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a landmark agreement facilitated by Pakistan to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran. The memorandum created a framework for continued dialogue and opened the door for technical discussions focused on maintaining stability in the Middle East.
The American delegation is being led by US Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Before formal discussions began, the US team met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. During the interaction, Vice President Vance acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and praised its role in helping both sides reach the negotiating table.
Following the US meeting, the Pakistani delegation held discussions with the Iranian side, represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The meeting also included Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has recently maintained active diplomatic engagement with Iran.
According to officials, the summit represents the first formal engagement between the two countries since the signing of the Islamabad MoU. Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated that Islamabad remains committed to supporting constructive dialogue and promoting regional peace through balanced diplomacy.
The negotiations come at a sensitive time, with recent developments in the Middle East creating fresh uncertainty. Despite ongoing challenges, both sides are expected to focus on confidence-building measures and practical solutions that can preserve the momentum generated by the peace agreement.
Observers believe the Lake Lucerne Summit could become a significant step toward reducing regional tensions and strengthening diplomatic cooperation between the United States and Iran.
