A major explosion at Qatar’s key LNG processing facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City has left 54 people injured and 18 others missing, according to officials. The incident occurred on Sunday evening during the start-up phase of operations at the Barzan gas supply facility, one of the country’s important energy infrastructure projects.

According to QatarEnergy, the explosion and subsequent fire broke out while operational activities were being initiated at the facility. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and worked quickly to contain the fire. Authorities later confirmed that the blaze had been brought under control.

The Qatar Interior Ministry stated that the explosion was caused by a technical accident. Officials emphasized that there was no gas leak or environmental threat that could endanger nearby communities or public safety. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident and whether additional safety measures will be required.

Search and rescue efforts continued throughout the night as emergency personnel worked to locate the 18 missing individuals. The Qatari International Search and Rescue Group, alongside civil defence teams, has been conducting extensive operations within the affected area.

The Barzan facility plays a significant role in supplying natural gas to Qatar’s domestic market. However, QatarEnergy has not yet confirmed whether the explosion caused any structural damage or operational disruptions at the plant.

Earlier, residents in Doha reported hearing a powerful blast that could be felt from several kilometers away. Witnesses described a loud boom before emergency vehicles rushed toward the industrial zone.

Qatar remains one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas, making any incident at its energy facilities a matter of international attention. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and that updates regarding the missing workers and investigation findings will be provided as more information becomes available.

Rescue operations and safety assessments are expected to continue in the coming days as officials evaluate the full impact of the accident.
