The federal government has officially extended business operating hours across Pakistan, citing longer daylight hours and increasing summer temperatures as the main reasons behind the decision. The revised timings were approved during a meeting of the Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Austerity Measures, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
Under the new guidelines, shops, markets, shopping malls, and retail outlets will now be allowed to remain open until 9:00 PM. Meanwhile, restaurants, cafes, and other eateries can continue operations until 11:00 PM. However, marriage halls and event venues must still close by 10:00 PM, with no changes made to their existing schedules.
The government clarified that takeaway and delivery services are exempt from these restrictions and can continue operating as usual. Additionally, several essential services will remain unaffected by the revised business hours. These include pharmacies, hospitals, fuel stations, IT services, and telecommunications facilities, ensuring uninterrupted access for the public.
Federal and provincial authorities have been instructed to work together for the smooth implementation of the updated policy. Senior officials from multiple ministries, including petroleum, climate change, information technology, and commerce, participated in the meeting to review the impact of existing measures and discuss the revised framework.
Earlier this year, restrictions on business hours were introduced as part of a broader energy conservation and austerity strategy. The measures were designed to reduce energy consumption after fuel prices surged due to regional tensions in the Middle East. Temporary relaxations were later granted during Eid ul Adha to support businesses and economic activity.
The latest decision reflects the government’s attempt to balance energy efficiency, economic growth, and public convenience during the peak summer season. Business communities across the country are expected to welcome the move, which provides additional operating time while maintaining key conservation objectives.
