25th Amendment Trump calls grow amid Greenland crisis

Former US President Donald Trump speaks at a press briefing as calls grow to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him

The debate over whether Donald Trump should be removed from office has intensified as calls to invoke the 25th Amendment grow louder among Democratic lawmakers and public figures. The renewed controversy stems from Trump’s escalating dispute with NATO allies over Greenland, which critics say raises serious concerns about his judgment and leadership.

According to reports, the movement gained traction after the release of private text messages in which President Trump allegedly linked his aggressive stance on Greenland to his frustration over not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. In one message addressed to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump reportedly stated that he no longer felt obligated to think purely about peace. The remarks sparked outrage and fueled claims that the president poses a risk to national security.

Several prominent Democrats have publicly called for action. Senator Ed Markey openly urged leaders to invoke the 25th Amendment, sharing news coverage of the issue on social media. Representatives Yassamin Ansari and Eric Swalwell echoed similar concerns, warning that Trump’s actions and rhetoric could undermine US alliances and global stability.

The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967, outlines procedures for transferring presidential power in cases of death, resignation, removal, or incapacity. It consists of four sections. The first ensures that the vice president becomes president if the office becomes vacant.—thesecond deals with filling a vice presidential vacancy. The third allows a president to temporarily hand over power voluntarily. The fourth, and most controversial, permits the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to declare the president unfit to carry out official duties.

If this section were invoked, Vice President JD Vance would immediately assume presidential powers. However, analysts describe the scenario as a political long shot, since it would require cooperation from Trump’s own cabinet members and eventual approval by a two thirds majority in Congress.

Despite the slim chances, the growing calls highlight deep political divisions and renewed scrutiny over presidential authority during times of international crisis.
