US President Donald Trump celebrated the first official flight aboard a newly modified Air Force One, a luxury aircraft gifted by Qatar, calling the experience exciting and describing the jet as unlike anything he had seen before. The flight marked a significant moment for the administration as the aircraft officially entered presidential service after extensive security upgrades and testing.
Before departing from Joint Base Andrews for a trip to North Dakota, Trump praised the aircraft and expressed gratitude to Qatar for providing the luxury Boeing 747 8. He stated that the United States would not have been willing to spend the amount required to build a similar aircraft, adding that the plane had been fitted with advanced presidential level security systems and state of the art technology.
The visit to North Dakota included an event at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, held as part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Trump told reporters he was looking forward to the journey and said the aircraft represented an impressive achievement after undergoing months of modifications.
The gift, however, has generated significant debate in Washington. Critics have questioned the ethical, constitutional, and national security implications of accepting an aircraft worth hundreds of millions of dollars from a foreign government. Concerns have also been raised over transparency and the long term impact of such a high value diplomatic gift.
Trump rejected those concerns, arguing that adapting the aircraft cost American taxpayers very little compared to designing and building a completely new presidential plane. According to the president, Qatar’s Emir insisted on donating the aircraft as a contribution to the United States after Trump initially requested permission to use it.
The luxury jet is expected to serve as a temporary replacement until Boeing completes two new purpose built Air Force One aircraft, a project that has experienced repeated delays and rising costs. Trump has consistently pushed for modernizing the aging presidential fleet, making the arrival of the Qatari aircraft an important milestone while the United States waits for the next generation of official presidential planes.
