A massive Venezuela rescue operation is continuing as emergency teams from several countries race against time to save a man who has remained trapped beneath a collapsed building for an entire week following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country. The remarkable rescue effort has become a symbol of hope amid one of Venezuela’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years.

The survivor, Hernan Gil, a 43 year old security guard, has been trapped inside his security booth since the powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes hit the coastal region of Catia La Mar on June 24. The disaster destroyed countless buildings, claimed nearly 2,300 lives, and left thousands of people missing or displaced.

International rescue teams from Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico have worked around the clock for several days to reach Gil safely. Rescue officials said they had managed to get within one metre of his location after carefully removing debris while stabilizing the damaged structure to prevent another collapse.

Throughout the operation, emergency crews have supplied water, fresh air, and constant monitoring to help keep Gil alive. Engineers reinforced the weakened building using wooden and metal supports before continuing the difficult excavation. Rescue experts also changed their original plan after movement in the building made the initial tunnel too dangerous to complete.

Video footage released by Chilean firefighters showed Gil conscious and responding while waiting for rescuers. His wife described his survival as nothing short of a miracle, expressing gratitude to the international teams working together to save his life.

Rescue leaders explained that reaching the trapped man has been extremely challenging because of the building’s large concrete pillars and unstable condition. Every step has required careful planning to protect both the survivor and rescue workers.

While hopes of finding additional survivors have diminished as time passes, the ongoing Venezuela rescue mission continues to inspire people around the world. The international cooperation and determination shown by emergency responders demonstrate the extraordinary efforts being made to save even a single life despite overwhelming conditions.
