A tragic explosion at a Basic Health Unit in Tharparkar claimed seven lives on Thursday when an oxygen cylinder detonated inside a parked ambulance. Among the dead were four hospital staff members, a pregnant woman and two attendants who were accompanying her.
According to Assistant Commissioner Nagarparkar Erum Karim Narejo, the ambulance belonged to the People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative and was stationed at the BHU Plus facility when the incident occurred. Rescue officials reported that the blast took place while staff members were changing the oxygen cylinder. Hospital administration confirmed that the pregnant patient was still inside the vehicle at the time staff began fitting the new cylinder. The sudden explosion immediately set the ambulance on fire.
The injured survivors were quickly transferred to Civil Hospital Mithi for medical care. District administration, rescue teams and health department officials reached the site soon after the blast. Identification of the deceased is currently underway as investigation teams examine the scene.
This heartbreaking event has once again highlighted the difficult conditions faced by public healthcare services in the arid district of Tharparkar. Residents in remote areas heavily depend on these facilities for emergency treatment and ambulance transport. Earlier reports from the region have pointed to long standing problems with ambulance availability and resource shortages at major hospitals.
Officials have not yet confirmed the exact technical cause of the cylinder explosion. However, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols followed during oxygen cylinder handling at health centres. Proper training and strict adherence to safety measures remain essential to prevent such tragedies in future.
Local authorities continue to support the affected families while ensuring all necessary assistance reaches those injured in the blast. The entire community of Tharparkar is mourning the sudden loss of lives at a place meant to provide care and healing. Health officials have promised a thorough probe so that similar accidents can be avoided and better safety standards can be enforced across public health facilities in the district.
