Doctor Saniya Jafri from Karachi is one example of this change. After leaving cardiology due to long working hours and family duties, she found it difficult to continue hospital-based practice. As a mother of three, balancing home life and career became challenging. Now, through a digital health platform, she has rejoined the profession and provides online consultations while managing her household responsibilities.
Reports suggest that more than one-third of female medical graduates in Pakistan either never enter the profession or leave after marriage. Around 70,000 women doctors are registered but not actively working, which adds pressure to an already strained healthcare system. However, initiatives like Sehat Kahani have helped bring over 7,500 doctors back into practice through virtual clinics and community health centers, improving access to care in underserved areas.
Telemedicine is also especially valuable for patients who prefer female doctors for sensitive health issues. It allows families in remote or low-income communities to receive timely medical support without traveling long distances.
Experts believe that cultural expectations and limited workplace support have long pushed women out of hospitals. Now, flexible digital systems are slowly changing this trend by offering safer and more balanced career options. This transformation not only supports working women but also strengthens Pakistan’s healthcare system by reconnecting trained professionals with patients in need.
