South Africa kept their hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage alive after battling to a hard earned 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. A late penalty from Teboho Mokoena secured a valuable point for Bafana Bafana and ensured that qualification remained within reach heading into the final group match.

The Czech Republic made a bright start and nearly took the lead within the opening minute when striker Patrik Schick missed a promising header. However, they did not have to wait long to break the deadlock. In the sixth minute, a well worked attacking move ended with Michal Sadilek calmly finishing past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to put the Czech side ahead.

South Africa struggled to create clear opportunities during the first half and found it difficult to break down a disciplined Czech defense. Despite showing determination and energy, they lacked the cutting edge needed in the final third.

The second half saw the Czech Republic continue to threaten and create chances. They looked capable of extending their advantage, but several missed opportunities kept South Africa in the contest. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams also played a key role with important saves that prevented the match from slipping away.

With time running out, South Africa finally found a breakthrough. A shot from Thapelo Maseko struck the arm of Czech defender Pavel Sulc inside the penalty area. After a brief review, the referee awarded a penalty. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped forward and confidently converted the spot kick, scoring South Africa’s first World Cup goal in 16 years.

The equalizer energized South Africa, who pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Relebohile Mofokeng came close to scoring, but Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar produced a crucial save.

The draw leaves both teams on one point in Group A. South Africa will face South Korea in a must win encounter, while the Czech Republic takes on group leaders Mexico. The final round of matches will determine which nations advance to the knockout rounds.
