The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has officially lauded Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his pivotal role in mediating the high-stakes peace talks between the United States and Iran. Speaking during the Vaisakhi festival celebrations at Trafalgar Square, Khan emphasized that the Prime Minister’s efforts reflect true statesmanship. He noted that Pakistan’s ability to act as a trusted partner for two global adversaries is a significant achievement for international diplomacy.

The Mayor highlighted that hosting Vice President JD Vance and the Iranian delegation in Islamabad was a masterstroke of peacekeeping. He pointed out that even President Donald Trump, who is historically critical of various leaders, has been vocal in his praise for PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Asim Munir. According to Khan, this recognition underscores the global importance of the ceasefire brokered on Pakistani soil, which is essential for stabilizing the global economy.

Beyond geopolitics, Khan used the festive gathering to celebrate multiculturalism and religious freedom in London. He shared the stage with the Sikh community, praising their contributions while drawing a parallel between the inclusive nature of the Vaisakhi celebrations and his recent Eid ul Fitr event. He addressed the rise in Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred, noting that despite criticism from right-wing groups, London remains a city where diverse identities—Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, and Christian—can coexist and celebrate together.

Mayor Khan concluded by reiterating that peace in the Middle East is not just a regional concern but a global necessity. He stated that the successful mediation in Pakistan has prevented a larger conflict, which would have had devastating effects on the economies of the UK and Europe. He urged the international community to continue supporting the diplomatic process to ensure the current ceasefire becomes a permanent resolution, bringing long-term security to the region.
