A 65-year-old woman lost her life on Tuesday after a shark attack while swimming off a popular beach on South Africa’s southeastern coast. The incident took place at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London. Local authorities and witnesses confirmed the tragic event.
Fatal shark attacks remain rare around the world, yet South Africa has recorded several deadly encounters along its extensive coastline over the years. On Tuesday morning, the municipality quickly closed nearby beaches and advised the public to stay out of the water for safety.
Police received a call around 7:00 am local time and arrived to find the body of the woman with open wounds. According to local reports, she was a regular swimmer who had joined a group in the water when the attack happened. Members of a local community group shared that other swimmers noticed a shark’s tail and fin moments before the incident. The victim suffered severe injuries to the right side of her arm and leg.
Officials described the event as a confirmed shark attack that ended in tragedy. The community expressed deep sadness over the loss of a familiar face at the beach.
Data from the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File shows there were 65 unprovoked shark bites worldwide in 2025, higher than the 47 recorded the year before. Of those, nine proved fatal, including one earlier case in South Africa. Experts point to several factors that may increase encounters, such as growing coastal populations, more people using ocean waters, environmental shifts, and changes in the movement of sharks and their prey.
Beach authorities continue to monitor the area and urge caution. Residents and visitors are reminded to follow safety guidelines and avoid swimming in areas where sharks have recently been sighted. The loss has left the local swimming community in shock as they remember a dedicated ocean enthusiast.
This incident once again highlights the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the need for constant awareness along South Africa’s beautiful yet sometimes dangerous shores.
