Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood is facing growing pressure after Pakistan suffered a disappointing 2 0 Test series defeat against Bangladesh national cricket team in Sylhet. Following the heavy setback, reports have emerged suggesting that Shan may be considering stepping down from the leadership role.
Pakistan’s defeat pushed the team down to eighth place in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 to 2027 standings, increasing criticism of the side’s recent performances. The national team failed to chase a massive target in the second Test, resulting in another difficult chapter for Pakistan’s red ball cricket campaign.
Speaking after the match, Shan Masood stated that he accepted the captaincy role with the aim of improving Pakistan’s Test cricket structure. He emphasized that leadership is not limited to holding a position and said meaningful progress in cricket requires patience and long term planning instead of constant changes.
The Pakistan skipper also highlighted that decisions regarding captaincy ultimately rest with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He revealed that he plans to discuss several important matters with board officials in the coming days. Shan further stressed that emotional decisions should be avoided after defeats and that the team needs stability to move forward.
According to reports, the Pakistan captain is deeply disappointed by the recent performances and is seriously thinking about stepping away from the role. Since taking over as Test captain in December 2023, Shan has led Pakistan in 16 matches, winning only four while losing twelve. His current win percentage stands at 25 percent.
Despite criticism, Shan defended the team and avoided blaming batting, bowling, or fielding individually for the recent losses. He said the main focus should remain on correcting mistakes and rebuilding Pakistan’s Test side with consistency and proper planning.
The coming weeks are expected to be crucial for Pakistan cricket as discussions continue regarding the future direction of the national Test team and its leadership.
