A giant Lionel Messi statue in the Indian city of Kolkata has been removed after authorities raised concerns about public safety. The massive structure, which stood approximately 21 metres tall, was reportedly seen swaying in strong winds, prompting local residents to alert officials.
The gold coloured statue portrayed Lionel Messi lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy, celebrating the Argentine captain’s historic achievements in international football. It was originally unveiled in December during Messi’s highly publicized visit to India, a tour that attracted widespread attention from football fans across the country.
According to local authorities, hydraulic cranes and ropes were used to carefully dismantle the towering structure before it was transported away on a flatbed truck. Officials stated that the decision was made after multiple complaints from nearby residents who feared the statue could become dangerous if weather conditions worsened.
The statue will now be stored in a government warehouse while authorities evaluate possible locations for its future installation. The incident has generated significant discussion across India, where football continues to enjoy strong popularity despite cricket remaining the nation’s dominant sport.
The removal also comes amid a changing political landscape in West Bengal. The statue was reportedly commissioned during the previous administration and had faced criticism from some political figures after a recent change in government. While supporters viewed the monument as a tribute to one of football’s greatest players, critics questioned both its appearance and placement.
Despite the controversy surrounding the structure, Lionel Messi remains one of the most admired athletes in India. Millions of Indian football fans continue to follow his career closely, particularly as he prepares to lead Argentina in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The incident highlights the importance of balancing public art, safety standards, and urban planning. While the statue’s future remains uncertain, the attention it received demonstrates Messi’s global influence and the passion football supporters have for the legendary Argentine superstar.
