Lahore has once again been ranked as the most polluted city in the world, recording an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 274, according to recent global monitoring data. As winter draws near, the city continues to suffer from severe smog, creating serious health risks for millions of residents.
Several areas in Lahore reported extremely high pollution levels, with Allama Iqbal Town (459), Gulberg (396), and Model Town (362) all falling within the “very unhealthy” to “hazardous” range. The citywide average of 183 remains far above safe limits, raising major concerns among environmental experts.
Health specialists have warned that prolonged exposure to such pollution can cause respiratory problems, eye irritation, and chronic illnesses. Authorities have urged citizens, especially children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions, to avoid outdoor activities and wear protective masks when necessary.
In response, the Punjab government has launched its first-ever anti-smog gun operation in Kahna, achieving a 70% reduction in local pollution levels. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb credited Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s leadership for helping lower Lahore’s AQI from 666 to 170 in targeted zones.
Officials have pledged to expand the initiative across Punjab, using advanced technology and public awareness campaigns to improve air quality and protect citizens’ health.
