In a deeply distressing incident that has sent shockwaves through the city, Dr Sarang Memon was targeted and killed late Monday night. The targeted killing occurred on the busy thoroughfare of Sharea Faisal in Karachi, as the victim was traveling home with his wife.
According to preliminary police reports, Dr Memon was commuting in a rickshaw from Cantt Station toward his residence near the Karachi Press Club. Witnesses and officials stated that a vehicle had been tailing the rickshaw before the assailants opened fire. The doctor sustained four gunshot wounds to his chest and legs. While his wife courageously rushed him to a nearby hospital in the same rickshaw, the chest wound proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Dr Sarang Memon was a dedicated professional serving at a private hospital in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. Originally hailing from Badin, his body has been transported to his native town for final rites. This tragedy adds to a series of misfortunes for the family; investigators revealed that one of the doctor’s brothers previously died by drowning in Jamshoro, while another was shot during the civil unrest following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
The Karachi Police and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South have confirmed that a high-level investigation is underway. Authorities are currently probing the murder from multiple angles, including potential personal enmity or targeted foul play. A formal First Information Report (FIR) is expected to be lodged by the bereaved family following the completion of the funeral proceedings. As the city mourns the loss of a medical professional, the incident raises renewed concerns regarding the security situation and the safety of citizens on Karachi’s main arteries. The search for the unidentified suspects continues as police scan CCTV footage from the crime scene.
