Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran have not failed, but the process is currently passing through a difficult phase. Speaking during his visit to New Delhi for the BRICS foreign ministers meeting, Araghchi explained that Tehran still has serious concerns about Washington’s intentions regarding peace negotiations.
The Iranian minister stated that Iran has “no trust” in the United States because of what he described as mixed and contradictory messages coming from American officials. According to him, these conflicting signals have slowed progress in negotiations aimed at ending tensions following months of military confrontation between Iran, the US, and Israel.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran remains open to diplomacy and is trying to maintain the current ceasefire agreement to allow discussions to continue. However, he warned that Tehran is also fully prepared to return to conflict if diplomatic efforts collapse. He added that the mediation efforts led by Pakistan are still active despite recent setbacks in talks.
The Iranian foreign minister also welcomed support from China, describing Beijing as a strategic partner capable of helping reduce tensions in the Middle East. He said Tehran would appreciate any constructive role from regional or global powers to help restore stability.
Another major issue discussed was the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Araghchi said all ships are currently allowed to pass through the strait except vessels linked to countries involved in conflict with Iran. He added that Iran wants to normalize shipping traffic in the area if diplomatic negotiations move forward positively.
His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump revealed that he discussed the Hormuz situation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stressing that the waterway must remain open for global energy supplies and international trade.
